October 20: A stray dog yesterday bit at least three students and two staff of
Dhaka Medical College boys' dormitory, Shaheed Dr Fazle Rabbi Hall, at
Bakshibazar in the city.
The injured were identified as fourth year students Nadim and Monon,
canteen boy Nayan and hostel guard Ferdous.
Another was a first year student whose name was not immediately available.
The injured were rushed to the DMCH where they received emergency treatment.
According to the students the incident took place inside the hostel
corridor at around 10 pm.
Injured Nadim said, he was standing in front of the canteen after
having his dinner when a dog ran into the corridor and jumped over
him.
The dog put red scar just above his knee. Nadim said, he saw someone was chasing the dog. Hostel guards said, the dog entered into the hostel biting one of
their staff, Ferdous, inside the hostel compound gate.
"They chased the dog later." Doctors at the hospital emergency said, the injured are secured. None were hospitalised and they will be given anti-rabies vaccine in phases, they said.
According to the experts, unattended dog bites can cause rabies, a
highly fatal infection that claims more than 2,000 people every year
in the country.
Once infected with rabies, death is inevitable, but the fatal disease
is totally preventable with the help of vaccine, experts say.
In Bangladesh 50,000 dog bites are recorded every year, according to
the reported cases of the Infectious Disease Hospital.
Stray dogs contribute most of the cases of the 90 per cent rabies in
the country.
The cases occur mostly during the months of August to October, the
mating season of the dogs.
