I wrote this article on 21 June 2009 on the eve of my pre-testing of the questionnaire for my dissertation.
Yesterday was the scheduled day of the Pre-testing of my questionnaire. Initially, I was supposed to go to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar for pre-testing. But Mamun proposed to go to Moulana Bhasani Medical College Hospital. I thought it was a good idea to do the pre-test in a separate institution from my listed medical college hospitals. So, all the day I made the questionnaire ready. At last, unfortunately, I forgot to photocopy it. With only the main printed copy when we reached the hospital, it was dark outside. I felt so stupid to collect data at night form the intern doctors. I was hesitating. But Mamun was trying to criticize me. He was telling me that my home work was not good. He added that I was not well prepared for the pre-testing. I had no other extra copy of my questionnaire. And I am not punctual. I have no knowledge of time management. Here I want to say that Mamun always tries to criticize me on some sensitive issues so that I can try to be good at those points. As, It is very difficult for me to tolerate any criticize, especially made by Mamun, so I decided to take at least one interview.
While we entered at the hospital, we found the emergency gate. We noticed that the hospital was clean and quiet. We found few nurses were working. I found a lady intern in Surgery ward. Her name was Ira. I explained her why we were there. She co-operated us gladly. After completing the task, we thanked her and moved out. I was having interest to take more interviews but due to lack of photocopy facilities nearby, and for growing night we decided to quit at that time. Afterwards, it came to my mind that evening and night would be the best time to talk to them. Because, in the morning they usually remain busy with patients and round with professors.
Anyway, that single pre-test taught me a lot. I started to think that pre-test is very much important. Not only for the questionnaire but also for my personal preparation. First of all, I learned that I have to be prepared completely. I should have all the documents I may need. I should have extra copies. I should be capable of time management. I should have the foresight of what can happen in the future. I should have enough time to perform my jobs. I should be more calculative. I should have the necessary tools that I may need to accomplish my duties. These are what I learned about my problems. Secondly, I learned that I need to change some of the questions.
Next day, with the corrected copy and with the correction of my problems, I along with Mamun again went to Moulana Bhasani Medical College Hospital for pre-testing. That day was interesting enough. We found a student of final year in the First Food Shop nearby. His name was Raihan. We discussed about the topic with him and wanted his opinion regarding the matter. We found that he smartly gave his opinion. Later, we found a bunch of intern doctors in the Register’s room. All of them gave their opinion with great enthusiasm.
At the very beginning while I was deciding my dissertation topic, I was a little confused about data collection. I thought that it would be difficult and I would not get any co-operation from the doctors. But I proved to be wrong. All were so interested that I got inspired. Now I am planning to start the actual data collection.
